I have been the diversity liaison for the Society of University Otolaryngologists where I have counseled medical students who are interested in my specialty of surgery on how to train and apply for a spot in the program. My husband and I have been diversity champions- he was the diversity officer at Boston Medical Center and Boston University Medical School when we lived in Massachusetts. Later when the opportunity was available, he became Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity at University of California San Diego. I'm very proud of the work that he did during that time to increase diversity and inclusivity at the university. I believe that in government, healthcare and education, this is especially true. I believe that diversity efforts are a way to bring everyone together in the United States. We all come from different parts of the world and have different beliefs, backgrounds, ancestry and thoughts. What brings us together is our desire to live healthy, peaceful and productive lives. We all need housing, education and healthcare. We need the love of our community, friends, coworkers and family. And we want everyone to have the best life possible in the United States.
